On one of those awful wet days we had in June (remember all that rain!) we popped into The Midway to try out their newly launched summer menu – how ironic!
In addition to the regular food offering that The Midway is deservedly well-known for, this new seasonal menu was packed with lovely salads, Mediterranean influenced dishes and light seafood and meat choices: it certainly looked refreshingly and temptingly summery, despite the howling winds and torrential downpours outside!
We started with the trio of Spanish Tapas to share – it was a great idea because we both like to try small dishes and this mix of Patatas Bravas (spicy potatoes), Albondigas (meat balls) and Fried King Prawns in garlicky oil was just the job to get the old taste buds awakened! The quality of these small dishes was second-to-none: tasty, well-balanced and very fresh indeed.
Owner Pauline has invested a lot of time and effort into upgrading the wine offering at The Midway, so we were happy to let her advise us. The rich and fruity Picpoul de Pinet she directed us towards was the perfect partner to our next dishes of Luxury Seafood Kebab and Mediterranean Lamb Rump. The kebab was a very generous serving of deliciously grilled chunks of meaty monkfish, sweet salmon with juicy king prawns, served with peppers and onions on an interesting mix of quinoa and rice. Served piping hot and clearly just off the grill, it was incredibly light and zingy – the perfect summer meal. Our photographer Eli went for the lamb rump – she was delighted with it, reporting that it was super tender, (cooked pink as she’d requested), hugely tasty and another huge portion to boot!
The dessert menu is a comfort-food lover’s dream, stuffed full of those lovely family-style puds we all love and don’t mind admitting to, but with a summery slant: Homemade Cheesecake, Eton Mess, Sticky Toffee Pudding, Profiteroles. Bliss for a hearty appetite but presenting quite a challenge after the two courses we’d already enjoyed. So once again we took our lovely waitress’s advice and plumped for the sharing platter (it’s the future!). This was a cornucopia of chocolate and strawberries. Fortunately, Eli and I agree that it’s a heaven-made match, so we were thrilled: Warm Chocolate Brownies, Profiteroles, Sherry Trifles, (big, fat, juicy) Strawberries, Fresh Cream, Chocolate and Caramel Dipping Pots. What more could you ask for to finish off a near-perfect summer-style meal? This was unconditionally gorgeous and we enjoyed every spoonful.
Stuffed, sated and feeling just a teensy bit guilty (all that chocolate!) we left The Midway, happy in the knowledge that we’d be back – very soon!
