Simply Brilliant Pub Food at The Nursery Inn

The Nursery Inn is hidden away on one of the few pretty cobbled streets left in The Heatons – which means it remains relatively undiscovered by many who are new to The Heatons. Which is a crying shame if you love a beautiful, traditional pub!

For the aesthetes amongst you, you might like to know that The Nursery (a CAMRA listed ‘Real Heritage Pub’) boasts a beautiful, (full sized) bowling green as well as a truly astounding array of original 1930’s features, including gorgeous wooden panels, clocks, windows, signs and door knobs. Even the gents’ urinals are protected!

Which is all very well and good – but it’s the food we’re talking about here today. And if you’re looking for brilliant ‘Pub Grub’ of a very high standard, served in lovely surroundings, by the friendliest waiting-on staff, then stop at those cobbles and treat yourself and the family.

It was a rather miserable, grey autumn
afternoon when photographer Eli and I pitched up at The Nursery Inn but we were soon mightily cheered by the two dishes cooked up by South African chef, Jordan: traditional Fish & Chips and smoky Chicken & Chorizo. Jordan’s bringing a touch of
quirkiness to his daily specials menu and proudly told us that customers are already ringing up to check what he’s got planned on their regular days! Our Fish & Chips was simple but nigh on perfect – crispy light batter covering fine white fish alongside chunky fat chips, served with a generous helping of mushy peas and tartare sauce. Our second, lighter dish was one of Jordan’s’ own recipes: tender chicken and smoky chorizo combined very nicely in a sauce of white wine, peppers and tomatoes. Thoroughly enjoyable both!

When Manager Chloe brought us a couple of yummy-looking desserts we almost gave up – but for you, dear reader, we rallied and managed to nibble a few delicate, ladylike spoonfuls of the waffles with chocolate sauce and Baileys Cheesecake (Eli nearly fainted – her two favourite things were combined in a pud!). They were a bit of an indulgence, yes, but for the occasional sweet treat, just right! All the dishes are cooked to order, so sit back and enjoy a drink while you wait – no rush!
