Thai taste and tradition meets modern day service in new restaurant, MANGO THAI

With the arrival of MANGO THAI on Shaw Rd, surely Heaton Moor is set to become one of the foodie hotspots of the North? And if this restaurant develops a reputation half as good as its history is interesting, then we’re in for a treat!

IMG_0197The owner may be known to many from her days entertaining the masses in West Didsbury with karaoke classics at ‘Crazy Wendy’s’, but Mango Thai doesn’t even nod at that experience so keep your vocal chords under wrap. This lovely restaurant is a delightful oasis of calm, built on the reputation of its highly experienced Thai team: owner Wendy, manager Koko and Chefs Tom and Ton.

Wendy and Koko met in the UK ten years ago and have worked as a formidable team ever since, running five hugely successful restaurants in and around Manchester, but both had cut their professional teeth in the hospitality industry in Bangkok many years earlier – Wendy as guest relations manager in the five star Asia Hotel and Koko as head chef in The Shangri-La Hotel.

IMG_0213Koko’s story is fascinating: one of 13 children he was born into a very poor Bangkok family….but as he explains, everyone was very poor so he felt no different from anyone else! The matriarch, his grandmother, worked in the Royal household of the King of Thailand and taught Koko everything she knew about cooking with local ingredients. To earn extra money she would cook delicacies to sell from her canoe on the floating Bangkok markets – and young Koko was her apprentice! Up every morning at 5am, the eight year old would often nod off at his end of the boat, (much to Grandma’s consternation) and he’d find himself rudely awoken by a bop on the head with a wooden spoon!  But he learnt everything he needed to know about typical Thai herbs and spices like galangal, lemon grass and Kaffir lime leaves…. and how to produce tasty, home-style dishes for the family – but with flavour fit for a King!

IMG_0224By way of stints spent working in upmarket hotels in both South-East Asia and Europe, Koko has brought all his expertise and wide experience to Mango Thai, and working alongside Thai chefs Tom and Ton has developed a menu he hopes we’ll love. Based around his and Wendy’s favourite dishes (many developed from Thailand’s famous ‘street food’) their offering is authentic, colourful and exciting. There are dishes you’ll know like red and green curries and fish cakes but also lots you’re probably not so familiar with like Goong Pla and Pad Kapraow.  And you could even be eating dishes like these at your private party in your own home, as Mango Thai offers not only a takeaway service, but an outside catering one too.  And on Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday, feel free to bring your own (wine only, not beer or soft drinks) for a £3.00 corkage charge.

Mango Thai is open Tuesday to Sunday from 12 noon to 3pm for lunch and from 5pm to 11pm

Takeaway is available from 5pm
