Heaton Chapel Literary Society Programme

2015

28th September: Chris Harling, “What it’s really like on Mount Everest”

From life at the base camp, acclimatization, oxygen starvation, the cold, the nitty gritty of bodily functions – a blend of interest, science and humour of a successful attempt on the summit of Mount Everest.

12th October: Hugh Beggs, “Merely Lakes”

A review of lakes which are such a feature of the landscapes of the North West of the British Isles. How were they formed? How are they changing at present? How long will they remain?

26th October: Gwynneth Mitchell, “Distant Shores”

In the nineteenth century six million people left Britain to go to Australia and New Zealand – a voyage of three to three and a half months. The talk looks at the voyage and the people who mostly travelled steerage.

9th November: Emma Marigliano, “Tim Bobbin, Hogarth of the North”

Tim Bobbin was the alter ego of John Collier, an 18th century dialect writer, particularly known in Rochdale. He also painted caricatures which earned him the title ‘Hogarth of the North’. The talk offers a different view of the influences of his work which might argue against this similarity with Hogarth.

23rd November: Keith Warrender, “The Battle for Kinder Scout”

The story of the struggle for access to some of Britain’s finest countryside. A fascinating account of life for Peak District walkers in the 1930’s.

7th December: Jean Bailo, “Women of Manchester”

Mention Manchester and women, the Pankhurst’s come to mind. The talk will introduce you to many other famous ladies with connections to the city, including Enriqueta Rylands, Lady Ann Bland and Annie Horniman.

The lecture will be followed by tea and mince pies.

2016

4th January: Paul Niblett, “William Morris, Lord Nuffield, the Oxford Story”

This talk is about the centenary of William Morris cars, the Morris Oxford and later the Morris Cowley.

18th January: Dr Paul Hindle, “Crusader Castles and Desert Cities”

A tour through Syria and Jordan, to Damascus, the Roman desert city of Palmyra, the Crusader fort at Krak des Chevaliers, Wadi Rum and Petra.

1st February: Malcolm Kenwood, “Fakes and Forgeries”

Malcolm is a former specialist police detective with the Sussex police, investigating art and antique crime. This lecture reveals actual case studies, demonstrating the length forgers will go to in passing off works as legitimate.

15th February: Zoe Barker, “Roads Less Travelled”

An illustrated talk about a journey into Africa’s safe bits. Join us on an adventure into some of the remote parts of Africa that tourists rarely visit.

29th February: Keith Holmes, “Des Res”

Keith has captured the extraordinary richness of some of England’s houses and places to live. There are buildings ranging from the ruined monastic settlement, Rievaulx to energy efficient houses of the 21st century.

14th March: Annual General Meeting and Members’ Night

Following the AGM there will be a talk by our own member, Alan Barker, “Mare à Mare – a walk across Corsica.  The talk will be followed by tea and cakes.

(I)Illustrated talk/lecture

All meetings are held on Mondays in St. Paul’s Church Hall at the rear of the church, St. Paul’s Road, Heaton Moor.  Lectures start at 8.00pm.  All visitors are welcome.  Entrance: £4.00
