British No.3 tennis player Naomi Broady

When people ask me what’s so great about playing tennis I can answer with one word – everything.

It really is a workout for your body and your brain because it not only works all the different muscle groups but it forces you to focus on where you want to put the ball rather than on how hard you are working physically. At the same time, it’s a very social sport – all of which makes it loads more fun than just plodding along on a treadmill or riding a bike in the gym.

You are rotating all the time, which works your core; you need strong legs for balance and to put weight behind your shots; and your upper body is executing the shots. Best of all it’s a fantastic cardio workout because you are sprinting around the court after the ball.

I still love playing, especially when we get to compete at home. I’m so proud of coming from Manchester and I’m thrilled that the Aegon Manchester Trophy is being played at the Northern in Didsbury, which is one of the first clubs I ever played at as a little kid and where I still train now. Tennis is coming home!

This year’s Aegon Manchester Trophy will be played 11-18 June at the Northern Club, West Didsbury. Call 0844 581 6902 (Open Monday – Sunday, 8am – 10pm) for tickets.
