A Kushy number

I love curry. It is pretty much always my cuisine of choice so when I was invited to the Kushoom Koly to sample their food I was more than happy to accept.

I booked a table for a Friday evening and as I’m a vegan I brought along a friend (Corinne Roberts) who eats meat so that I could give a fuller picture of our experience.

As soon as we arrived we were welcomed and taken to the bar where we ordered our drinks. Faruk, the owner came to introduce himself and showed us to our table which was lovely and right by the window looking out onto Shaw Road. The atmosphere was vibrant: it was busy and full of chatter. Faruk explained the menus to us and let me know which dishes were suitable for me – I was happy to find that I had plenty to choose from. Each dish can be altered to suit your own personal taste and if you wish they can make up your own dish from scratch.

We had pappadoms to start and all the dips including lime pickle which was so good! For our starter we had a vegan sharing platter which was amazing. Every single mouthful was just beautiful. There were so many different flavours and textures and there was so much food, which always gets a big thumbs up from me.


Our main courses arrived and they were plated beautifully. My vegetable kalia was delicious: the spices were subtle and the flavours were immense and it was full of fresh vegetables and potatoes -including ochre which I love but don’t get to have often. Corinne was tucking into one of the Kush specials – a thick lamb dish which she ordered on Faruk’s recommendation: it’s one of his favourites. She said it was really tasty with just the right amount of ‘hotness’ – she also said her naan bread was one of the best she had tasted. The chef who came out to see if everything was okay for us , as even after you have ordered your food he can alter it if it is not quite to your taste –  which is a really nice touch. All the staff were so attentive and were quick to clear our table and replenish our drinks.

It was such a nice evening, spent in a lovely local restaurant, eating gorgeous, authentic food with good company. Thanks Faruk and ‘the Kush’!
