The A.I.D.A. Marketing Formula

There is a four stage process that a customer goes through before making a purchase. These are summarised in the acronym A.I.D.A. This stands for Attention, Interest, Desire and Action. The objective of all your marketing material should be to fulfil one or more stages of the A.I.D.A. marketing formula.

Attention (or Awareness): Your potential customers need to first be aware that your product exists. You need to grab their attention with a LOUD & PUNCHY headline or an attention grabbing image, to generate excitement.

Interest: Having got their attention, now develop their interest. How will your product enhance the lives of your customers? Don’t just list the features, sell the benefits!

Desire: Now make them really want it! Do this with time-bound offers, money-back guarantees or bonuses for buying more than one.

Action: This is the step that’s most often forgotten about. You need to tell your customers what to do! Examples include “CALL NOW FOR A FREE QUOTE” and “Order on-line now”! Make it as easy as possible for your customers to find you and make the purchase.

When designing marketing material, run it through the A.I.D.A. formula to make sure it has the greatest impact and the best chance of success. Of course knowing what you want your marketing materials to look like and actually designing them are very different things. A professional design can make the difference between a mediocre response and a fantastic one. Not convinced? Never mind, leave it to the competition instead.
